Trilobites roamed the ocean floors for over 270 million years, and went extinct about 250 million years ago. Present day descendants include the insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and others. The trilobites were among the most successful of all early animals, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years. That is 80 million years longer than the 190 million years dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

The first appearance of trilobites in the fossil record defines the base of the Early Cambrian period, and they flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before decline to extinction at the end of the Permian period about 250 million years ago.
