About this Product Greek Love Poet, 5th Century BC. Sappho was born on the island of Eressos (Lesbos) in Greece. The Alexandrians included her in their list of The Nine Lyric Poets, a prestigious group of ancient Greek poets esteemed by the scholars of Hellenistic Alexandria as worthy of critical study. The bulk of her poetry, which was well-known and greatly admired through much of antiquity, has been lost; but her immense reputation has endured through surviving fragments. Sappho died c. 570 B.C. in Lesbos, Greece. Her poems were posthumously compiled into nine books in the third century B.C.
